Now that we’ve (hopefully) finished off the last of the hot cross buns and the days are getting longer, our thoughts are turning to long weekend rambles and trips to the coast. But before you chuck the ball thrower in the boot and head for the hills, is your pup actually “spring-ready”?

Think of April as the perfect time for a Doggy MOT. Just like your car needs a once-over to keep it running smoothly, your four-legged mate needs a bit of seasonal maintenance to stay in tip-top shape.

Here are 5 ways to give your dog a total spring “glow-up” this month.

1. The All-Important Vet MOT

We know, the vet’s office isn’t exactly your dog’s favourite place (the treats are good, but the thermometer? Not so much). However, an annual health check is the single best way to catch little niggles before they become big, expensive problems.

Your vet will check their heart, lungs, and—crucially for those of us with “vintage” pups—their joints. As the weather warms up and we walk more, you’ll want to make sure those knees and hips are up to the task of a three-mile trek through the bluebells.

2. Evicting the “Hitchhikers” (Fleas & Ticks)

April is officially “Wake Up” month for the UK’s less-than-pleasant residents: fleas and ticks. As the grass grows longer in our parks and woodlands, these tiny stowaways are looking for a warm coat to call home.

  • Ticks: With Lyme Disease on the rise in the UK, keeping your preventative treatments up to date is non-negotiable.
  • Fleas: One flea can turn into a household infestation faster than you can say “Pass me the Dyson.”

Check your calendar—if you’re a few weeks late on the spot-on or tablet, now is the time to get back on track.

3. The Pitter-Patter of Tiny Talons

If your dog’s walk sounds like a tap-dancing rehearsal on your kitchen lino, their claws are too long! During the winter, we often walk on softer ground or skip the long pavement jaunts, meaning claws don’t wear down naturally.

Overgrown nails can actually change the way your dog walks and cause joint pain. Grab the clippers (or book a quick “mani-pedi” at the local groomer) to get them back to a comfortable length.

4. The “Big Admin” Check

It’s the boring bit, but it’s the law! While you’re checking their health, take thirty seconds to check their ID tag.

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog in a public place in the UK must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address (including postcode) on it. If you’ve moved house recently or your phone number has changed, April is the perfect time to order a shiny new tag. While you’re at it, log in to your microchip database and make sure those details are current too!

5. Pearly Whites (and Better Breath)

“Dog breath” is often accepted as a fact of life, but it’s actually usually a sign of dental disease. Since we’re all about the spring clean this month, why not start a new dental routine?

Brushing is the gold standard (chicken-flavoured toothpaste makes it much easier, trust us), but if your dog treats a toothbrush like an enemy combatant, look into dental chews or water additives. Your nose—and your vet—will thank you during the next cuddle session.
