It’s almost May 20th, which means it’s almost National Rescue Dog Day! While every day is “Rescue Dog Day” for those of us with a former stray snoring on our sofas, today is the official moment to shine a spotlight on the incredible organisations that make those happy endings possible.

In a city as busy as London, our rescue centres are often at capacity, working tirelessly to turn “unwanted” into “unforgettable.” Whether you’re looking to adopt, foster, or simply donate the price of a fancy Shoreditch flat white, here are five London-based rescues doing the lord’s work in 2026.

1. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home (SW8)

You can’t talk about London rescues without mentioning the granddaddy of them all. Nestled right next to the iconic Power Station, Battersea has been rehoming animals since 1860. They don’t just take in the “easy” dogs; they are experts at rehabilitation and finding the perfect match for even the most complex pups.

  • Why we love them: Their “Wear Blue for Rescue” campaign has become a staple in May, helping to destigmatise rescue animals and celebrate their quirks

2. All Dogs Matter (N2)

Based in North London, All Dogs Matter is a fantastic charity that works across London and the surrounding counties. They use a mixture of kennel stays and foster homes, which is brilliant for dogs who find the shelter environment a bit overwhelming.

  • The 2026 Vibe: They often host brilliant community events like “Pup Idol” on Hampstead Heath. Keep an eye on their socials for their May fundraising walks!

3. The Mayhew (NW10)

Located in Kensal Green, The Mayhew describes itself as an animal welfare charity rather than just a shelter. They do amazing work in the local community, helping vulnerable people stay with their pets during tough times, which often prevents dogs from needing to enter the rescue system in the first place.

  • The Difference: Their “TheraPaws” programme brings wagging tails to hospitals and care homes across the capital, proving rescue dogs have so much love to give back to Londoners.

4. Dogs Trust (Harefield/West London)

While Dogs Trust is a national giant, their Harefield centre serves the West London masses with incredible facilities. Their slogan, “A dog is for life,” is more relevant than ever in 2026 as the city gets busier and more expensive.

  • Top Tip: Harefield is one of their most modern centres, featuring “rehabilitation suites” that look more like tiny living rooms to help dogs get used to a home environment before they’re adopted.

Dogs on the Streets (DOTS)

DOTS is a volunteer-run station that provides essential vet care, food, and grooming for the dogs of London’s homeless community. While they aren’t a traditional “shelter” in the sense of having a central kennel, they are a vital safety net that keeps the capital’s most vulnerable duos together.

  • How to help: They are often looking for foster carers who can step in if an owner needs to go into hospital or temporary accommodation that doesn’t allow pets.
